What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Visit

Walking into a chiropractor’s office for the first time can feel unfamiliar. You might wonder what the exam involves, whether adjustments hurt, or how long the visit takes. Here’s a clear picture of what to expect so you can feel confident and prepared.

Before You Arrive

Most chiropractic offices will ask you to complete intake paperwork before your appointment. This typically covers your health history, current symptoms, lifestyle habits, and any previous imaging or diagnoses.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
  • Bring any recent X-rays or MRI results if you have them
  • Write down your questions ahead of time
  • Arrive 10–15 minutes early to complete paperwork

The Consultation

Your chiropractor will start by sitting down with you to discuss your concerns. This conversation covers where your pain is, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it’s affecting your daily life.

This isn’t a rushed conversation. A thorough consultation is the foundation of an effective care plan, and a good chiropractor will take the time to listen carefully.

The Physical Examination

After the consultation, your chiropractor will perform a hands-on examination. This typically includes:

  • Posture analysis — observing how you stand and move
  • Range of motion testing — checking how far you can bend, twist, and turn
  • Palpation — feeling along the spine for areas of tension, misalignment, or tenderness
  • Neurological screening — testing reflexes, muscle strength, and sensation

Depending on your symptoms, your chiropractor may also recommend X-rays to get a detailed look at your spinal structure.

Your First Adjustment

If the examination findings support it, many chiropractors will perform your first adjustment during the initial visit. During an adjustment, the chiropractor applies a controlled, precise force to specific joints in the spine.

Most patients describe the sensation as a quick, painless pressure followed by immediate relief. Some hear a popping sound — this is simply gas releasing from the joint and is completely normal.

You might feel some mild soreness in the hours following your first adjustment, similar to what you’d feel after a workout. This is normal and typically resolves within 24 hours.

The Care Plan Discussion

Before you leave, your chiropractor will review their findings and recommend a care plan. This outlines how many visits they suggest, what goals they’re working toward, and what you can do at home to support your progress.

A good care plan is transparent about timelines, costs, and expected outcomes. You should never feel pressured into a long-term commitment during your first visit.
